Here is a short, yet interesting distillation Via “The World Atlas of Wine,” an invaluable text for any one interested in the subject. This was the text we used in Culinary school. I try to dip into it still, at least for a few minutes per night. A study in Greek wines yesterday led me to this interesting factoid.
“Whether it was in Turkey, Georgia, or Armenia that the first wine was made, there is no doubt that the Middle East is wine’s birthplace. The Eastern Mediterranean was the France and Italy of wine in the ancient world-until the 8th century and the advent of Islam. Today Turkey has the fourth largest vineyard acreage in the world, but hardly 3% of the grapes are made into wine.”
Class Dismissed.
